Oakhurst and Adventure
This is the tale of Adora Belle and Lucifer, two very different adventurers somehow seeking fame and fortune together. Adora Belle is a beautiful one-eyed eye-catcher with an imaginary friend, while Lucifer is a winged human-like creature who fancies pikes.
They find themselves heading down the New Road toward Oakhurst. They have heard rumors of a sunken fortress that holds riches, which they aim to find. They spend just enough time in town to load up on supplies, ask around about the fortress, and hire an extra hand to help carry things.
Although it was late in the day by the time they were finished stocking up on supplies, they decide to head out toward The Sunless Citadel.
The Old Road
They make their way down the Old Road, an old and underused road that fell into disrepair and disuse after a surge of goblin banditry. The road is overgrown, but quiet. They only make it a few miles before nightfall. Thankfully the sky is clear, and it looks to be a bright summer night.
During the night, some walking bushes sneaked up on Lucifer while he was on watch (he was not doing a good job, obviously). While odd and very hostile, they did not pose much of a threat. More attacked the camp during Adora Belle’s watch as well, but were quickly dispatched.
When morning came, the group continued down the road. After a few more hours, they came to a ravine, and noticed some old posts in the ground next to them. The are was also obviously used for many camps over the past few years. Lucifer spied a knotted rope hanging into the ravine, and assumed that this is where they were heading!
Adora Belle descended the rope first, while Lucifer hovered over the ravine, watching. Once she made it to the bottom and their hired hand began climbing down, she was assaulted by three giant rats! While a great nuisance, they were unable to harm her; once her flying friend got to the bottom, the two slew all three.
The landing upon which they stood was covered in the bones of small animals, and also had a ring of stones obviously used for campfires long ago. On the south side of the landing stood some switchback stairs, leading down into the darkness. They lit their lanterns, and down into the darkness they went.
The narrow stairs empty into a small courtyard, apparently the top of what was once a crenellated battlement. The buried citadel has sunk so far into the earth that the battlement is now level with the surrounding cavern floor. The floor stretches away to the north and south, and it is apparently composed of a layer of treacherous, crumbled masonry, which reaches to an unknown depth. To the west looms the surviving structure of what must be the Sunless Citadel. A tower stands on the west side of the courtyard.
Heading into the courtyard, they make out a door in the tower. Lucifer walks ahead to open it, noticing a wooden panel in the floor. He hovers over it and presses on it with his pike, pushing open a trap door, through which he can make out a few skeletons and more rats. They decide to ignore the pit, and move into the tower.
This circular area is cobbled with cracked granite, upon which sprawl four goblins, all apparently slain in combat. One stands with its back against the western wall, the killing spear still skewering it and holding it upright.
Adora Belle searches the goblins, taking the only valuable items they had – their swords, while Lucifer flies up the crumbled tower to search the high remains. Finding nothing, they assess their situation, pondering which way to go next.
